Long story short, drinking two glasses of sugary sparkling wine and a few sips of beer at a party led me to feel insanely groggy the next day. On a separate occasion, I drank only top shelf tequila cocktails and felt perfectly fine in the morning. Weird, right? Sugar laden sparkling wines had me all types of messed up, but not tequila. After further investigation, here are my findings for the best ways to drink while on keto...or for anyone watching their waistline.
Avoid anything sweet! This includes sugary mixed drinks and sweet wines like moscato, dessert wines and commercial high volume wines like Yellowtail or Barefoot. These wine brands cater to the American palette, which craves a candy sweet wine. Unfortunately, sugary mixed drinks and commercial wines probably have a lot of added carbs and sugar. Not good for anyone watching their figure and especially for those who don’t want to get knocked out of ketosis.
Reach for clear, hard liquor - because it’s basically water and alcohol (low on carbs). Spirits such as unflavored Tequila, Vodka, and Gin are better options compared to wine/beer. They are also low on sugar compared to wine/beer - so it won’t affect your insulin levels.
What about dark liquor? Whiskey, Scotch, Bourbon, Rum, Brandy and Cognac are ok too. Just be sure to avoid any flavored products.
If you really don’t want to miss out on your wine down wednesdays, opt for these recommended reds and whites. For lower carb reds, choose a glass of Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot. For whites, a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, or Chardonnay will do.
Sip on your spirits neat or on the rocks. However, if you must choose a chaser, stick with diet tonic water, seltzer, sugar-free or diet drinks, sugar-free carbonated water. Add a few squeezes of lime or lemon to your Vodka, Tequila or Gin - for a refreshing affect. Or if you’re like me, pass the tequila shots!
If you want to be a superstar, don’t drink at all! Drinking often leaves to drunk munchies and will have you regretting those dollar pizza slices in the morning.
